Whirlpool Corporation says it’s confident the Trump administration will investigate the company’s allegations that competitors are evading tariffs by underreporting the value of their imports.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that Whirlpool has informed the administration overseas competitors in Thailand, South Korea, and Vietnam started decreasing the customs value of numerous appliances back in June as tariffs loomed. A lower customs value will mean lower tariffs.
A review of the data shows imported washing machines from South Korea, for example, have dropped from nearly $840 to $73 in recent months.
In a statement Monday, Whirlpool told us it has “shared its concerns about this data with the administration at various levels” and also raised the issue directly with foreign competitors, including Samsung, LG, and the owner of GE Appliances. Whirlpool continues, “Recent trade policies can only help level the playing field for U.S. manufacturers if foreign-owned companies play by the rules.”
Whirlpool says as a U.S. manufacturer for more than 100 years, it will stand up for its approximately 20,000 U.W. employees.
While the company has shared its concerns with the administration, it has not filed a formal complaint.
Whirlpool’s full statement is below:
“Customs data shows that the declared values of home appliances imported from Korea, China, Thailand, and Vietnam dropped precipitously as the Trump Administration’s tariff policies were going into effect, which raises concerns of potential duty evasion.
Whirlpool Corporation has shared its concerns about this data with the Administration at various levels and also raised it directly with foreign appliance producers, including Korea-based Samsung and LG and China-based Midea and Haier (which owns GE Appliances).
Recent trade policies can only help level the playing field for U.S. manufacturers if foreign-owned companies play by the rules. As a U.S. manufacturer for over 100 years, we will always stand up for our approximately 20,000 U.S. employees. Whirlpool Corporation is appreciative of the Administration’s support for American manufacturing, and we are confident that the Administration will thoroughly investigate these concerns and take appropriate action.”
