The Hagar Township Board of Trustees could soon consider a resolution opposing a proposed constitutional amendment in Michigan that would eliminate property taxes.

Backers of Ax MI Tax are now collecting petition signatures to get the question on the November 2026 ballot, but Hagar Township Supervisor Izzy DiMaggio tells us it’s a bad idea. While the thought of not paying property taxes might be appealing at first glance, he says that would leave local governments throughout the state without a way to fund services everyone uses.

It’s going to take away our mills for public safety, going to take away our mills for parks, recreation, all that sort of stuff,” DiMaggio said. “It takes that away. So, and the promise is that the state of Michigan will take care of us.”

DiMaggio sees a problem with leaving the funding of local services to the state.

The state can’t even put together a budget that the school districts needed months ago so they can start planning their efforts instead of borrowing money. So it is very, very scary to me personally.”

Ax MI Tax would eliminate more than $20 billion a year in taxes collected around Michigan. Those funds support schools, cities, townships, villages, libraries, and counties.

DiMaggio says he’s working to bring a resolution of opposition to the Hagar Township Board soon.
