Governor Gretchen Whitmer is laying out her concerns over a slowing economy as well as a need for a budget deal with just two weeks until a potential government shutdown.
Whitmer says two of Michigan’s most important industries are suffering under the tariffs implemented by the Trump administration.
“Michigan’s two largest and most critical industries, autos and agriculture, are hit the hardest,” Whitmer said. “MDARD’s report yesterday confirmed it. Our farmers are hurting. We’re already seeing rising costs in Michigan because of tariffs.”
Whitmer says farmers are being hit especially hard when it comes to exports. Wheat exports have dropped 89% in just one year, fresh cherry exports are down 62%, and apple exports are down more than 50%.
