Students who need treatments like autism therapy could soon receive them without missing class under new legislation introduced by State Representative Pauline Wendzel.
House Bill 5044 would require Michigan school districts to allow students with a prescription or recommendation from a licensed health care professional to receive treatment during the school day.
Wendzel says the bill is designed to remove confusion for schools and families while keeping students in class. She says right now, many families face uncertainty about whether services like applied behavior analysis therapy can be delivered in a school setting. Wendzel says her legislation would establish clear statewide policies.
The proposal now heads to a House committee for consideration.
