A 15-year-old boy has died after being shot Wednesday afternoon in Benton Harbor, authorities said.

According the the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, officers from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety responded to the 1000 block of Buss Avenue for a report of shots fired. While en route, dispatch informed them that a child had been struck by gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found the 15-year-old wounded. He was transported to Corewell Hospital in St. Joseph and later transferred to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he succumbed to his injuries Saturday morning. His name has not been released due to his age.

Police said two other juveniles were located nearby at a Quikway store during the investigation. A 20-year-old male was detained at the scene as a person of interest. A subsequent search warrant at an apartment in the 975 block of Buss Avenue led to the recovery of a firearm.

Following the teen’s death, the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office upgraded the charges against the 20-year-old to open murder and assault with intent to murder. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.

A 16-year-old was also placed in the Berrien Juvenile Center in connection with the investigation.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting and have not released additional details about the motive or circumstances.
