Guardians 5, Tigers 2 – Guardians down Skubal and Tigers 5-2 to tie for AL Central lead with 5 games left
José Ramírez drove in a run with a swinging bunt when Cleveland rallied in a strange sixth inning against Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, and the Guardians beat the Tigers 5-2 to move into a tie for first place in the AL Central. Cleveland caught Detroit after being 15 1/2 games back on July 8. The Guardians are 17-5 in September. The Tigers have dropped seven straight. Skubal fell apart in the sixth. He became visibly shaken when Cleveland’s David Fry was struck in the face by his 99 mph fastball. The team said Fry was being assessed at a hospital.
Yankees 3, White Sox 2 – Yankees head to postseason for 8th time in 9 seasons with AL East race still up for grabs
The New York Yankees are headed to the playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons. But first, there’s plenty to play for over the final days of the regular season. New York secured its spot in the postseason with a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night on José Caballero’s RBI single with two out in the ninth inning that scored team captain Aaron Judge with the winning run. While the win clinched at least an AL wild card, the Yankees closed within a game of East Division-leading Toronto after the Blue Jays lost 4-1 to Boston. New York and Toronto, which won the season series over the Yankees, have five regular-season games remaining with the division crown very much up for grabs.
Mets 9, Cubs 7 – Alvarez hits 2-run homer in 8th as Mets rally to beat Cubs 9-7
Francisco Alvarez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning, Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo went deep and the New York Mets rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-7. Alvarez gave New York a 9-7 lead when he connected with two out against Caleb Thielbar after Brett Baty led off with a single, and the Mets came away with the win after trailing 6-1. They moved a game ahead of Cincinnati for the third wild card with the Reds losing 4-2 to Pittsburgh. Lindor led off the game against Cade Horton with his 29th homer.

MLB – Guardians’ David Fry hospitalized after being hit in face by pitch
Guardians designated hitter David Fry was expected to be hospitalized overnight after he being hit in the face by a pitch from Detroit’s Tarik Skubal in the sixth inning of Cleveland’s 5-2 win over the Tigers. The victory moved the Guardians into a tie for first place in the AL Central. Fry squared around to try to bunt a 99 mph fastball from Skubal and the pitch struck him in the nose and mouth area. As Fry collapsed and grabbed his bloodied face, a visibly shaken Skubal threw off his glove and cap as Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt and trainers rushed onto the field.
MLB – MLB will use robot umpires in 2026
Major League Baseball’s 11-man competition committee has approved use of the Automated Ball/Strike System in the major leagues in 2026. Human umpires will still call balls and strikes, but teams can challenge two calls per game. Challenges must be made by a pitcher, catcher or batter. A team retains its challenge if successful. Reviews will be shown as digital graphics on outfield videoboards. Adding robot umps could reduce ejections, as most are related to balls and strikes. The Automated Ball/Strike System has been tested in the minor leagues since 2019. The challenge system allows for ABS without eliminating pitch framing, a skill for catchers. This is MLB’s first major rule change since 2024.

Aces 90, Fever 68 – Wilson scores 25 points as Aces even WNBA semifinal series at 1-1 with win over Fever
A’ja Wilson bounced back with 25 points and nine rebounds, leading the Las Vegas Aces to a 90-68 win over the Indiana Fever. The victory evens the WNBA semifinals playoff series. The best-of-five series moves to Indianapolis for Game 3 on Friday night. Wilson also achieved a playoff career-high with five steals. NaLyssa Smith added 18 points, while Jackie Young and Jewell Loyd each contributed to the win. Despite being short-handed, the Fever have proven tough, upsetting Atlanta in the quarterfinals and now heading home with a chance to close out the series.
Mercury 89, Lynx 83 – OT – Mercury snap back from 20-point deficit to beat Lynx 89-83 in OT and even semifinal
Satou Sabally scored 11 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter and Alyssa Thomas had 19 points and 13 assists to help the Phoenix Mercury erase a 20-point deficit and beat the Minnesota Lynx 89-83 in overtime on Tuesday night, tying the WNBA semifinal series at one game apiece. Sami Whitcomb’s 3 from the wing with 4 seconds left in regulation evened the game at 79 after Thomas kept alive the possession following Whitcomb’s airballed 3 from the top of the key. Napheesa Collier’s jumper for the win on the other end fell short at the horn to force overtime.
NFL – Lions answer questions about offensive line, pass rush and new coordinators
The Detroit Lions have answered any lingering questions about their offensive line, pass rush and new coordinators. In one of the most impressive wins of the Dan Campbell era, the Lions beat the Baltimore Ravens 38-30 on Monday night with a mix of brute strength, dazzling skill and gutsy coaching. Detroit’s reshaped offensive line that was put in flux when four-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow retired did not let Jared Goff get sacked for the second straight game. The line also opened huge holes for running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
NCAAFB – Oklahoma State fires football coach Mike Gundy after 20-plus years
Mike Gundy, one of college football’s most colorful coaches over the last two decades, has been fired by Oklahoma State. Gundy, who played quarterback at the school in the late 1980s, had a career record of 170-90 at his alma mater. He posted winning records every season from 2006 to 2023 but had losing records in his final two years. Gundy became head coach in 2005 and helped the Cowboys compete with better-funded programs. However, the team struggled recently, losing 11 of their last 12 games. Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg says “we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard.”
