MLB – Detroit’s Skubal back in Cleveland to face Guardians after nightmare inning
Detroit’s Tarik Skubal returns to the mound Tuesday for the AL Wild Card Series against Cleveland. This comes a week after a tough game where Skubal accidentally hit Cleveland’s David Fry with a fastball, causing serious injuries. Skubal visited Fry in the hospital, and both teams say there’s no ill will. Tigers manager AJ Hinch believes Skubal has moved past the incident. Skubal had a strong season with a 2.21 ERA. Cleveland’s Gavin Williams, who has been impressive since the All-Star break, will pitch against Detroit. The Guardians won the season series and clinched the AL Central title.
MLB – Machado and the Padres face Swanson and the Cubs in the playoffs at Wrigley Field
The San Diego Padres were terrific at Petco Park this season, going 52-29 on their way to an NL wild card. It was a different story on the road, where Manny Machado and company finished with a 38-43 record. Machado and the Padres are back on the road for the first round of the playoffs, beginning on Tuesday afternoon when they face Dansby Swanson and the Chicago Cubs in the opener of their best-of-three series at Wrigley Field. Nick Pivetta pitches for San Diego, and Matthew Boyd starts for Chicago.

Dolphins 27, Jets 21 – Darren Waller has 2 TDs, Dolphins beat Jets 27-21 but lose Tyreek Hill to leg injury
Darren Waller had a pair of touchdown catches in his first NFL game in nearly two years, and Tua Tagovailoa threw for 177 yards to lead the Miami Dolphins to their first win of the season, 27-21 over the New York Jets. The Dolphins lost star receiver Tyreek Hill to what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the third quarter. Hill was carted off and taken to a hospital. Tagovailoa completed 17 of 25 passes and didn’t have a turnover Monday night as he moved to 7-0 against the Jets as Miami’s starter. The Dolphins are 1-3 while the Jets fell to 0-4.
Broncos 28, Bengals 3 – Broncos snap skid with 28-3 win over Bengals fueled by Dobbins’ 100-yard game
The Denver Broncos routed the Cincinnati Bengals 28-3 to snap a two-game skid and send Cincy to its second straight blowout loss since losing star quarterback Joe Burrow to a toe surgery. J.K. Dobbins recorded Denver’s first 100-yard rushing game since the 2022 season finale with 101 yards on 16 carries. The Broncos visit the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles next weekend, and the Bengals host the Detroit Lions.
NFL – Bears’ Ben Johnson says his team was ‘a mess’ in win over Raiders
For the first time since the season opener, Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson disliked much of what he saw from his team. That changed near the very end of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Johnson couldn’t complain about the result after the Bears pulled out a 25-24 win. Chicago now has a bye week for Johnson to try to fix his team’s many problems. He says what the Bears put on video on Sunday was “a mess.” But he says Caleb Williams showed how he can thrive in the two-minute offense.
NFL – Lions dominate Browns despite injuries to cornerbacks
The Detroit Lions had a lot of things go right in Sunday’s 34-10 win against the Cleveland Browns. Now they need to find out how costly the game will be in the long run. The Lions lost both starting cornerbacks to injury against the Browns — D.J. Reed to a hamstring injury and Terrion Arnold to a shoulder problem.

NCAAFB – Bill could generate billions by allowing conferences to pool their TV rights
Democratic senators are proposing a bill that would rewrite a 1961 law prohibiting college sports conferences from banding together to sell their media rights. It’s a move they say is designed to protect athletes, Olympics sports and smaller leagues that could be getting priced out of an increasingly expensive era of name-image-likeness deals. The Student Athlete Fairness and Enforcement Act is an attempt to give lawmakers an alternative to a bill on the House side that has yet to come up for a vote in front of the entire chamber.
NBA –Cunningham and Pistons aiming to advancing in playoffs for 1st time since 2008
Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons took a big step last season. Cunningham went from having an injury-stunted start of his NBA career after being the No. 1 pick overall in 2021 to being named a third-team, all-league player and an All-Star for the first time. He led one of the best turnarounds in league history, helping Detroit become the first team to triple its number of victories from the previous year in an 82-game season. He helped the franchise end an NBA-record, 15-game postseason streak with its first of two wins against New York in a first-round exit.
NBA – Bulls exec Arturas Karnisovas continues to preach patience from frustrated fans
Chicago Bulls executive Arturas Karnisovas had a familiar request for frustrated fans. He stressed patience, just as he did at the end of last season. Karnisovas says the Bulls “can’t skip steps.” Chicago has just one playoff appearance in five seasons since Karnisovas was hired as executive vice president of basketball operations. The Bulls return largely intact after going 39-43 for the second straight season and finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference. A team that went 15-5 down the regular-season stretch only to get knocked out of the play-in tournament for the third year in a row by the Heat had a rather quiet offseason.
