October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Berrien County Health Department is reminding women of the importance of regular screenings.

Clinical and Community Services Supervisor Dionne Rigozzi tells us breast cancer is very treatable when it’s detected early. That’s why the health department urges women to check themselves each month.

We have like a shower card that gives instructions on how to do a monthly self -check. We encourage folks to be consistent each day of the month doing their breast exam.

Rigozzi says family history is especially important to consider.

If there’s a high risk associated in the family, definitely starting at the age of 40, it is encouraged, strongly encouraged and recommended that women have annual mammograms.”

Rigozzi says it’s also important to have generally healthy living habits to help prevent cancer. Follow a healthy diet, get regular exercise, avoid excessive alcohol, and don’t smoke.

The Berrien County Health Department does offer exams and will work with patients on the cost. Women who schedule an appointment for a breast cancer risk assessment or screening in October will receive a pink ribbon pin courtesy of the Berrien County Cancer Service.

Around 9,000 women per year in Michigan are diagnosed with breast cancer. Anyone who wants to arrange for a screening or get more information can contact the Berrien County Health Department.
