Congressman Tim Walberg says the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal that went into effect this month is partly due to work done by President Trump during his first administration.

While Walberg tells us the deal is thanks to Trump’s strong leadership now, the Abraham Accords, reached in 2020, laid the groundwork for cooperation between Israel and several nearby countries. He says the war would have been worse if not for the accords.

That establishment of allyship in the first administration carried on into this particular treaty that was made and signed early this week,” Walberg said.

Walberg says because two years have gone by since October 7, 2023, when 1,195 people were killed in a Hamas attack on Israel, some might need to be reminded how this all started.

Sometimes we forget actually who brought this about. And so I take any opportunity to remind people that it was Hamas that broke a ceasefire that was in place on October 7, two years ago. It wasn’t Israel. It was Hamas that brutally inserted themselves in.”

Walberg says President Trump’s threat to Hamas that the United States will disarm them if they don’t disarm themselves shows that he’s a realist who understands this is just the beginning of a path to peace in the region. He tells us the ceasefire deal is the result of “solid, strong leadership.”
