A ribbon cutting will be held next week for a new disc golf course in New Buffalo Township.

Township Parks Director Patrick Donnelly tells us the course is at Glassman Park, off Glassman Road in Union Pier. The township acquired the roughly 40-acre site back in the 1970s and ramped up its development about ten years ago.

We actually built a parking lot and a kayak launch there in 2016, and then about two years ago, our parks board was talking about ideas to do with the upper area that we had there,” Donnelly said. “One of the members suggested a disc golf course, and we just kind of ran from there.”

Donnelly says a grant from the Pokagon Fund, state funding, and dollars from the township’s parks millage have helped to pay for the 18-hole disc golf course. It has nine pads taking players around the woods.

Each pad is a circle and there’ll be two baskets off each one. It’s kind of in different layouts though, so you’re not shooting towards the same one twice, but just different distances as well as obstacles like trees and valleys and hills and whatnot.”

Donnelly says they just completed Phase 2 of the course a couple of weeks ago, making it more accessible with a 100-foot pad that can be used in a variety of ways.

The Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber and New Buffalo Township will hold the ribbon cutting to celebrate completion of the course on Friday, October 31 at 11 a.m.

Donnelly notes that since the disc golf course was completed, a couple of leagues have already been using it, making it their regular course.
