Voters in communities throughout Southwest Michigan will head to the polls next Tuesday to decide a variety of ballot questions, and in some cases, to elect their municipal leaders.
In Benton Harbor, two at-large seats on the city commission will be filled. The candidates are Commissioner Duane Seats, former Commissioner Mary Alice Adams, and newcomers Deidre Field and Shaquille Turner. Adams and Turner got the most votes in the primary back in August. Also in Benton Harbor, two ward seats are being decided, but both of those races are uncontested. The incumbents are Juanita Henry and Ethel Clark Griffin.
In St. Joseph, three city commissioners will be elected out of a field of six. The candidates are Commissioner Michael Sarola, Commissioner Michael Fernandez, and newcomers Kim Jorgensen Gane, Tom Jennings, Ryan Katowich, and Lisa Vetne. The two candidates who get the most votes will receive four-year terms, while the third highest vote getter will receive a two-year term.
In South Haven, the race for mayor is between Annie Brown and Mary Hosley. There are three council seats on the ballot. The candidates are Lisa Krupiarz and Eddie Polk in Ward 1, and Thomas Capps and Todd Heinrich in Ward 2. There’s a city council race in Ward 3, but the only candidate is Dave Flack.
Voters in Hartford will also decide the mayor’s race and vote for city commission, while voters in Gobles will elect some city commissioners.
