The city of Benton Harbor has reportedly reached a settlement to end ongoing litigation over its water crisis from 2018 to 2021.
Mayor Marcus Muhammad and the city announced on Friday that plaintiffs in the case against the city and its officials have filed a request for court approval of the agreement to resolve claims relating to the alleged issues with the water. Under its terms, the city will enter into a consent judgment for $25 million and assign its right to pursue claims against its insurance company.
This means the plaintiffs will take over any ongoing litigation seeking funds from the city’s insurance, and the city, its government, and its residents will not pay any amount toward the judgment.
Mayor Muhammad says, “The city and its officials have denied any wrongdoing.” The city adds it’s “committed to meeting state and federal requirements for water quality, and to working with state and local organizations to promote resident welfare.”
More information on this agreement will be posted soon to BentonHarborWaterSettlement.com. As of Friday, the site still had not gone public.
