Van Buren County deputies responded to a fatal medical call this week, and Sheriff Dan Abbott is calling attention to the extra actions taken by a deputy to help at the scene.

The sheriff says mounted division member Brittany Hood stepped in to care for the family’s horses while deputies assisted the victim’s widow, who has health issues. He offered condolences to the family.

Abbott released his weekly report on Friday, also saying deputies this week arrested a suspect in Bloomingdale Township following a domestic violence incident. The suspect faces multiple charges, including third-offense domestic violence involving a pregnant victim and first-degree home invasion.

In Antwerp Township, deputies are investigating a break-in at a home under renovation during which hand tools were stolen. The sheriff also reported numerous larcenies and vehicle break-ins across several townships. Investigators believe suspects from the Kalamazoo area used a stolen vehicle to commit the crimes before returning to Kalamazoo.

Finally, the sheriff’s weekly roundup highlighted the department’s annual “Shop with the Sheriff” event, funded entirely through donations and partnerships. It helps selected local families make the holidays more special without using public funds.
