The Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library in St. Joseph is receiving a $13,000 grant from the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor Rotary Foundation to improve accessibility at its building.
The library says the funding will be used to install automatic door openers on its restrooms, helping remove barriers for seniors, people with disabilities, wheelchair users, and families with young children.
Library Director Paula Stakley says heavy doors can make restrooms difficult or even impossible for some patrons to use, and the upgrades will promote greater independence and dignity. The project aligns with the library’s strategic plan, which includes a focus on improving accessibility across its services and facilities.
Stakley adds the library believes its “value is measured not just by its collection, but by its ability to serve all people equitably,” saying the grant will help ensure that’s the case.
The new restroom doors are expected to be installed in early 2026.
