An increase to the maximum jobless benefit for Michigan residents went into effect at the start of the new year.

Michigan’s weekly maximum for unemployment benefits is jumping to $530. That’s up from the current $446.

State officials say residents who file their claims today or later will see the increase, but those who filed before January 1 will not.

The maximum amount an unemployed worker receives for each dependent went up by about seven bucks to a maximum of $19.33.

The boost comes as a result of bipartisan legislation.
