The St. Joseph Township Planning Commission will review the latest proposal for use of the former Nye’s Apple Barn property on Niles Road next week.

Owner John Nye has submitted a new mixed use development plan to the township, seeking a rezoning of the site and the approval of a Planned Unit Development designation.

The St. Joseph Township Board of Trustees narrowly rejected Nye’s previous proposal back in November. This new proposal isn’t much different.

Documents provided to us by the township show Nye is seeking to construct two three-story apartment buildings with a total of 48 units, a gas station, a fast-food establishment, and a commercial welcome center. The only major differences from the previous plan are that this plan includes one less fast-food restaurant and appears to preserve the existing apple barn structure.

Nye will explain his proposal to the Planning Commission Tuesday during a public hearing set to start at 6:30. The meeting will likely be similar to the previous commission meeting back in November. It featured a large number of nearby residents opposed to the proposed development, citing concerns like noise and traffic.
