A package of bills would tighten rules surrounding drones in Michigan.

The bills would criminalize trespassing using drones and allow law enforcement to destroy those violating the law.

Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy Jake Bouchard runs the department’s drone unit. He says education can be a more powerful tool than force.

What we see most commonly is not necessarily that people are operating in an intentionally nefarious nature, but oftentimes an uneducated one, in which case the proper role is not necessary to pull out your .30-06 or your buckshot and bring the drone down over the crowd, but potentially just walk up, shake hands, and engage in a little bit of community policing,” Bouchard said.

No decision was made during this week’s hearing before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
