An autopsy is scheduled after the recovery of a body from the St. Joseph River in Niles on Sunday.
The Niles Police Department says 911 received a call about the body being spotted by two people walking along a path on the east side of the river around 12:20 p.m.
Officers responded to the east shoreline between the Broadway and Main Street bridges and found the body just under the surface of the water.
With aid from the Niles Fire Department, the body was pulled from the water and later identified as 59-year-old Michael Allen Witt of Niles.
Police say there are no obvious indications of the cause of death.
The autopsy will now be performed at the Western Michigan University medical school in Kalamazoo.
