The Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven will open its 2026 Lecture Series with a presentation by maritime historian and underwater explorer Valerie van Heest next Wednesday, February 25.

The museum says Van Heest’s program, “History of the Great Lakes in 12 Shipwrecks,” explores how twelve historic shipwrecks illustrate the evolution of commercial transportation on the Great Lakes, tying maritime history to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The multimedia lecture will highlight key moments in American history and the role shipping has played in shaping the region.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the museum, and admission is free for museum members and $10 for non-members. Tickets are available online.
