The director of the Benton Harbor Public Library has resigned.
The library tells us Reynaldo Frias-Santana turned in his resignation on February 18, his last day. That same day, Frias-Santana — who is a Capuchin monk — addressed the Benton Harbor Downtown Development Authority to thank the community.
“I am a monk living outside of my religious community, which is established in Ohio and Pennsylvania,” Frias-Santana said. “I have been in conversation with my superior and I want to say thank you for allowing me to be here. But I have been requested to return to my community. So sadly, I will be sometime within the next week returning back to my religious life, which is prayer and life of penance.”
Frias-Santana is a master-level librarian who was brought to the Benton Harbor Public Library in May of last year from Philadelphia. He’s originally from Puerto Rico.
The library tells us its board will meet on Tuesday, March 17, and possibly discuss the search for a replacement. At this time, there’s not yet a process in place.
