Continuing Saturday at the Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds will be the Berrien County Conservation District’s annual Tree Sale.

The sale started Friday. Conservation District Manager Lisa Kuntz tells us the event is a major fundraiser for the district, supporting its conservation and environmental programs throughout the year. They’ve got a variety of evergreens, spruce trees, pines, firs, and fruit trees.

Kuntz says around 2,000 people per day come out to the tree sale.

We have everybody from the urban farmer to the large-scale farmer that’s planting evergreens for their windbreaks,” Kuntz said. “We have just small urban residentials that want to grow little plots of trees in the backyard, and then we have the homesteaders that come out and they’re putting in a small orchard.”

They’re also selling rain barrels, shelter tubes, marking flags, and books. Kuntz says this is your chance to get in on some tree planting for a lower price than what you’d find at many nurseries.

These are seedlings, so a lot of your nurseries around here, they’re going to have full-size trees. So this is an affordable option for the person that’s just starting out that doesn’t want to go buy a six-foot tree.”

New this year is the Christmas tree bundle, which includes ten trees. Kuntz says if you’re planting this year, go to the fairgrounds and check out the sale. They’re set up in the home economics building, right next to the fair office.

The sale will continue Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
