Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homer and the Detroit Tigers pulled away to a 7-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. Torkelson had gone five games without a homer after tying a franchise record by homering in five consecutive games. Kevin McGonigle had two RBI singles and Matt Vierling added a two-run double for Detroit, which has won all five of its home series. McGonigle’s line drive single in the sixth knocked in Jake Rogers, who led off the inning with a liner that bounced past center fielder Evan Carter for a triple.Hao-Yu Lee chipped in a run-scoring single.

White Sox 6, Angels 0 – Murakami slugs 14th homer, Martin goes 7 strong innings as the White Sox beat Angels 6-0
Munetaka Murakami hit his 14th homer and Miguel Vargas also went deep as the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-0. Murakami’s two-run blast in the fourth inning kept the Japanese rookie tied with New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge for the major league lead in home runs. Murakami also hit his first double of the season in the sixth, singled and scored in the eighth, finishing 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Davis Martin allowed five hits in seven shutout innings, with 10 strikeouts and no walks, improving to 5-1 and lowering his ERA to 1.64.

Cubs 5, Reds 4 – Michael Conforto comes through in a pinch as streaking Cubs rally in 9th for 5-4 win over Reds
Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto capped a two-run ninth inning with a solo homer and the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 for their sixth straight win. Seiya Suzuki hit a 455-foot home run for the NL Central leaders, who improved to 23-12 with their 16th win in 19 games. Chicago has won 12 in a row at home, the team’s best streak at Wrigley Field since a 14-game run in 2008. The Reds have dropped four straight. Pete Crow-Armstrong tripled leading off the ninth on a ball that popped out of center fielder Dane Myers’ glove as he tried to make a leaping catch against the wall. Crow-Armstrong scored one out later on Nico Hoerner’s sacrifice fly. Conforto, batting for Matt Shaw, then homered to center.

MLB –Tarik Skubal to have elbow surgery to remove loose bodies
Two-time American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will have surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow after being scratched from Monday’s start against the Boston Red Sox. Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that the left-hander felt pain in his elbow on Sunday, less than a week after an injury scare against the Atlanta Braves. The 29-year-old — set to become a free agent next offseason — underwent tests that showed the loose bodies. The surgery hadn’t yet been scheduled. There is no immediate timetable for his return.

NBA – Detroit Pistons announce extension with coach J.B. Bickerstaff
Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff has agreed to a contract extension on the heels of Detroit’s first-round playoff series victory over the Orlando Magic. Details regarding the value and length of the extension were not released by the Pistons when they announced the deal on Monday. The Pistons have gone 104-60 in regular-season games under Bickerstaff and made two playoff appearances since he took over at the start of the 2024-25 season. This season, the Pistons had the best record in the Eastern Conference at 60-22 and on Sunday defeated Orlando 116-94 to close out a playoff series victory for the first time since since 2008.

NFL – Colts QB Richardson shows up for offseason workouts, AP source says
Quarterback Anthony Richardson made an appearance at the Indianapolis Colts’ voluntary offseason workouts Monday, a person with knowledge of his attendance told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because team attendance is not typically released publicly. Richardson had been working out in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, when the Colts began the workouts as his agent searched for a team interested in acquiring Richardson in a trade.

WNBA – Chicago Sky waive Hailey Van Lith and sign Natasha Cloud
The Chicago Sky waived point guard Hailey Van Lith after drafting her in the first round last year and signed guard Natasha Cloud. Van Lith struggled after being drafted with the No. 11 overall pick. She averaged 3.5 points in 29 games following a standout career at Louisville, LSU and TCU. Cloud has averaged 8.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 10 seasons with Washington, Phoenix and New York. She averaged 10.1 points and 5.1 assists for the Liberty last season. The Sky also waived second-round picks Maddy Westbeld and Aicha Coulibaly on Monday. Chicago opens the season at expansion Portland on Saturday.

NCAAMBB – Former ND guard Markus Burton becomes one of top transfers to join Indiana
All-conference point guard Markus Burton has officially joined the Indiana Hoosiers from Notre Dame, second-year coach Darian DeVries has announced. The 5-foot-11 Burton is one of two top 25 players DeVries plucked out of this year’s transfer portal. Burton was limited to only 10 games last season because of an injury to his left ankle. He averaged 18.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 48.9% from the field and 30.6% on 3-pointers. The 2023 IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball Award winner finished his Notre Dame career with 1,315 points, 232 rebounds, 259 assists and 123 steals in 69 career games.

NCAAMBB – Detroit Mercy men’s basketball banned from postseason for academic reasons
The Detroit Mercy men’s basketball team is facing a postseason ban next season because the program did not meet the benchmark for the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate. Detroit Mercy athletic director Robert C. Vowels Jr. released a letter on Monday confirming the academic problems, which comes one day before the NCAA is scheduled to release its annual APR report. The news blunts Detroit Mercy’s recent momentum on the basketball court. The Titans finished with a 17-15 record last season, including a 12-8 mark in the Horizon Conference and made it all the way to the conference tournament finals before losing to Wright State 66-63.
