A Southgate, Michigan man has been airlifted to a Chicago hospital to be treated for injuries received in a rollover semi crash in New Buffalo on Wednesday.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says first responders were called to the scene at the westbound I-94 offramp to US-12 around 6:15 a.m. on a report of an injury crash involving a semi. They arrived to find the truck lying on its driver’s side and the driver trapped in the cab.

The truck had been pulling a double dump-trailer full of coal to Burns Harbor, Indiana.

The driver, 67-year-old Billy Gibbs of Southgate, was freed and taken to Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana for treatment before being airlifted to Chicago. He remains in critical condition.

The sheriff’s department believes speed was a factor in the crash, but adds Gibbs may have suffered a medical emergency while driving, causing him to go too fast.

Westbound US-12 near I-94 and the Exit 4 offramp were closed for cleanup for more than six hours following the crash Wednesday morning.
