Twins 11, Tigers 1 – Ryan Jeffers hits 2 HRs, Walker Jenkins has 1st MLB HR as Twins defeat Tigers 11-1
Ryan Jeffers had two homers, Walker Jenkins went deep for the first time in his major league career, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 11-1. Taj Bradley (10-6) struck out nine in seven innings, his seventh outing with at least nine strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed one run on four hits and allowed three walks. Jenkins, the Twins’ fifth overall selection in the 2023 draft, had a two-run homer in the eighth off of position player Zach McKinstry for his first big-league knock. The 21-year-old is the third-youngest player in baseball and was the top prospect in the Twins system before his call-up on Friday.
Astros 6, White Sox 3- Velázquez hits 2-run homer and Smith adds 2-run double as Astros surge past Sox, 6-3
Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run homer and Cam Smith added a two-run double to lead the Houston Astros to a 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox in a series opener between American League division leaders. It was the fourth victory in five games for the Astros, who remained two games ahead of second-place Texas in the AL West. Houston led by one with one out in the fifth when starter Anthony Kay walked Christian Walker with the bases loaded to make it 4-2. Trevor Richards replaced Kay with two outs and Smith doubled home two more to make it 6-2. Colson Montgomery hit his 29th homer to cut it to 6-3 in the seventh, but the AL Central leaders couldn’t muster any offense after that.
Cubs 17, Brewers 3 – Alex Bregman hits 3 home runs and Cubs set team record with 9 in 17-3 rout of Brewers
Alex Bregman hit three of Chicago’s franchise-record nine home runs and the Cubs punctuated their August power display with a 17-3 blowout of the Milwaukee Brewers. Clay Holmes pitched six scoreless innings for the Cubs, who launched five homers off Milwaukee starter Kyle Harrison in the first four innings and three more against position player Andrew Vaughn late in the game. Chicago went back-to-back twice, in the first inning and the fourth. The nine longballs matched the second-most by one team in a major league game, according to Sportradar. Toronto hit 10 during an 18-3 victory over Baltimore in September 1987. Chicago finished August with 62 homers, second-most by a big league club in a calendar month behind the 74 hit by the New York Yankees in August 2019.

WNBA – New York Liberty lead the WNBA with 7 players headed to the FIBA World Cup
As the WNBA goes on its FIBA World Cup break, no team has more players headed to Germany then the New York Liberty. Like the city they play in, the Liberty are an international smorgasbord with players from France, Nigeria, China, Germany, Australia, Spain, the Bahamas and the U.S. New York will have seven of them playing in the tournament that begins Sept. 4 in Berlin. The Liberty would have an eighth, but Satou Sabally is still recovering from a concussion so can’t play for Germany.
NCAA – UCLA ousts athletic director Martin Jarmond
UCLA has fired athletic director Martin Jarmond after six years and is replacing him with former Los Angeles Lakers executive Tim Harris. The change was announced in a letter from Chancellor Julio Frenk on Monday. Jarmond leaves immediately. The Bruins won three NCAA championships last season, including the first by the women’s basketball team. Harris will have the title of CEO and athletic director while working on a pro bono basis. Harris graduated from UCLA in 1989 with a sociology degree and played goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team. He left the Lakers in February after over 35 years with the NBA franchise.
NCAAFB – Coaching connections add intrigue to ND’s season opener with Wisconsin
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman played for Luke Fickell at Ohio State and coached on his staff at Cincinnati. Fickell says he isn’t surprised at the way Freeman has developed into one of college football’s top head coaches in the years since they worked together. The two coaches meet again Sunday night when Freeman’s fourth-ranked Notre Dame team opens the season against Fickell’s Badgers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Freeman had Fickell as his position coach while playing linebacker at Ohio State from 2004-08. Freeman also worked for Fickell at Cincinnati from 2017-20 as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

Dramatically low flyby by passenger jets over South African stadium sparks safety debate A pregame stunt involving two passenger jets flying dramatically low over a sports stadium in South Africa has sparked a major debate over safety risks. The flyby by two Embraer jets operated by the local airline Airlink took place on Saturday before a rugby game between South Africa and New Zealand in Cape Town. A flight tracking service estimated that one of the jets passed just 41 to 46 feet or about 12 to 14 meters above the roof of the stadium packed with an estimated 56,000 fans. Aviation experts on Monday questioned the safety margin. They say that the low pass left crews with limited options if something went wrong.
