Lake Michigan College is now taking nominations for its Alumni Awards.

LMC’s Rita Whise tells us they’ve given out the awards each year since the 1980s to honor those graduates who have made a difference in the community.

There are three awards. First up is the Gladys Peeples-Burks Alumni Service Award, named for graduate Gladys Peeples-Burks, a longtime community volunteer who died a few years ago.

This award is given to an alumnus who’s offered significant personal or professional contributions to Lake Michigan College or the community.” Whise said. “So this one focuses a lot on kind of volunteerism.”

Whise says the next award is the Clarence Beckwith Distinguished Alumni Award. Named for LMC’s first president, the award goes to an LMC alumnus who has been successful post-graduation.

A lot of it really is geared towards their professional endeavors, their success within their career. It can be more personal as well.”

Finally, there’s the Alumni Achievement Award, which is given to a recent alumnus who has demonstrated significant achievement, and distinguished themselves in their career, education, or community. The nominee must have graduated within the last 15 years.

Whise says nominations will be taken online through June 15. The winners will be announced at a celebration in the fall.
