In a sign the summer has truly arrived, the safety flags are now once again flying at city beaches in South Haven.
South Haven Area Emergency Services says the flags that let people know about swimming conditions will be flying at all seven city beaches through at least mid-September.
Remember — a green flag means there’s calm water with good swimming conditions, although everyone should always use caution when in the water.
A yellow flag means there’s potentially high surf, and anyone entering the water should use extreme caution. A red flag means there’s dangerous surf and strong currents.
When a red flag is posted, it’s illegal to enter the water, and violations could result in a fine of $1,000. The same applies to going on the pier. Stay off the pier if the red flags are flying or you could get a fine.
With the beach flags flying Thursday, SHAES says it was probably still a little too cold to swim for most people, but the option was there.
