A new director has been appointed at the Benton Harbor Public Library.

Reynaldo Frias-Santana brings years of experience in public library leadership to the job. Library Board President Mamie Yarbrough says a master-level librarian who meets all Michigan state requirements. He also brings a unique background as a Capuchin monk.

Frias-Santana replaces former Library Director Kat Boyer, who resigned in August 2023 after more than 30 years.

The Library Board’s Marian Tripplett says the body took its time looking for a new director to ensure the candidates could see all of Benton Harbor, understand who they’re serving, and that the library belongs to the community.

Yarbough says Frias-Santana is “amazing,” adding he’s “experienced, visionary, and deeply community-oriented.” She says he told the board his office would be out with the people, not just behind a desk.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Frias-Santana now works in Philadelphia, but he’ll be in Benton Harbor soon to take the reins at the library.
