Congressman Bill Huizenga is praising House passage of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” overnight Thursday.

The House approved the sprawling measure on a vote of 215 to 214. The package enables Trump tax cuts to become permanent and also slashes spending to major programs like Medicaid.

Huizenga said on social media after the bill’s passage the Medicaid cuts are about catching fraud, and not punishing people who genuinely need a safety net.

The fact that we’ve basically incentivized people to stay out of the workforce when we know we’ve got needs in the workforce,” Huizenga said.

Huizenga says there are Medicaid recipients who could work but choose a government handout over a paycheck. He added this budget preserves funding for expanded use of nuclear energy.

Being able to separate out the work that had been done previously to promote wind and solar from the nuclear and what that means for us in Michigan with Palisades, it’s huge.”

Huizenga said he just met with representatives of Palisades owner Holtec International and was told there are about 1,400 people at that site now preparing it for a restart. He added the “big, beautiful bill” preserves tax cuts that mean savings of 15% for those making between $30,000 and $80,000 a year.

The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate.
