Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting on Monday in Niles Township.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says one of its deputies was in the area of Third Street and Fort Street around 6 p.m. when he approached a vehicle. As he did so, its passenger ran off while the vehicle sped off southbound on Third Street.

Police say the deputy was chasing the male suspect who fled on foot when the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the deputy. The deputy then fired back, killing the suspect.

State police have been asked to investigate the circumstances of the incident and the deputy has been placed on administrative leave, as is usual protocol.

The sheriff’s department has not said why the deputy approached the vehicle or what happened with the driver of it. The department is releasing no further information at this time.
