The WNBA is coming back to Detroit.

The league pulled the Detroit Shock out of the Motor City in 2009, but has announced a new expansion team is coming back. The new team will join the league in competition beginning in 2029.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer was pushing for Detroit to get the bid for a team. She posted a reaction on social media.

Detroit, we are so back,” Whitmer said. “WNBA is back in the Motor City. Today marks a historic moment for basketball fans across Detroit and the great state of Michigan. Three WNBA championships already under the belt.”

The team will play its games at Little Caesars Arena, bringing another 22-plus sporting events to the city each year and delivering additional economic impact to the restaurants and small businesses to downtown Detroit.
