Three individuals from Rockford, Illinois, are facing multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding and weapons offenses, after a high-speed pursuit on I-94 in Lincoln Township Tuesday night culminated in a crash and foot chase.
According to a statement from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, a patrol officer attempted to stop a blue Cadillac for speeding on eastbound I-94 near the 22-mile marker at approximately 9:40 PM on July 1. The driver, however, failed to yield, initiating a vehicle pursuit that continued into Benton Township.
The chase ended when the Cadillac crashed into a wooded area along US Highway 31 near Napier Avenue. All three occupants then attempted to flee the scene on foot. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office quickly deployed police K-9s and drones to assist in the search.
Ultimately, all three suspects were apprehended. A subsequent search of the crashed Cadillac yielded a rifle and a handgun, which were seized by police.
A 25-year-old male from Rockford, Illinois, has been lodged at the Berrien County Jail on charges of fleeing/eluding, resisting/obstructing police, and several weapons crimes. A 20-year-old male and a 24-year-old female, both also from Rockford, Illinois, were lodged for resisting/obstructing police.
The case has been forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for further review and formal charges. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Benton Township Police Department during the incident.
