The city of Benton Harbor will be able to install some solar panels at its facilities with a new grant announced on Monday by the state.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy says eight communities are receiving the first Solar for Savings grants to support MI Solar for All pilot programs. In total, a tentative $7.9 million will be awarded to solar projects designed to help low-income participants save money by reducing energy costs. The actual amounts of the grants will be finalized in the coming weeks.
In the case of Benton Harbor, the grant will be used to install solar power at city facilities with a goal of reducing water bills for residents.
EGLE says projects like Benton Harbor’s will serve as pilot projects laying the groundwork for the broader MI Solar for All program, a federally funded initiative. MI SFA will provide direct financial aid for rooftop solar, community solar, energy storage, and upgrades, as well as workforce development, community outreach, and technical assistance.
EGLE will take applications for another round of Solar for Savings grants in September.
