The Berrien County Board of Commissioners appears to have passed on approving a resolution stating its support for the Michigan Department of Transportation’s plans to reconstruct Main Street in downtown St. Joseph in 2027.

We’ve reported commissioners were asked to approve the resolution this month after hearing an MDOT presentation on the project.

While not necessarily opposed to the idea of rebuilding the street, some members of the board didn’t want to set a precedent of officially supporting a construction project that isn’t the county’s. Plus, some commissioners expect the project will lead to major traffic problems and they don’t want to get blamed. They say the Main Street rebuild is strictly a state and city project, and the Berrien County Road Department has nothing to do with it.

The resolution of support was initially on the agenda for this week’s meeting of the board, but prior to voting on the consent agenda — or a package of resolutions that gets approved all at once — commissioners removed the rebuild resolution of support.

There was no comment on the matter. It may, or may not, come up again at a future meeting.
