Police are reminding everyone to be careful when crossing busy streets after a family of four was injured crossing Main Street in St. Joseph on Wednesday.
The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety says its officers were dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Main and Pleasant Street around 1:10 p.m. Two adults and two children suffered non-life-threatening injuries when they were struck by a vehicle trying to cross.
The department is telling everyone to only cross the street at crosswalks, and better yet, cross where there’s a traffic light and a signal. It says even if the “walk” sign is on, it’s still important to look both ways before crossing.
Additionally, police remind drivers to put away their phones when behind the wheel, noting pedestrians have the right-of-way when crossing, and drivers are required to yield to them in crosswalks.
In all instances, police say drivers are obligated to avoid a crash with pedestrians.
