The Berrien County Road Department has launched a new mass notification system designed to keep the public informed about road conditions, construction, and closures.
Called BCRD ALERT, the free service allows residents to sign up to receive updates by phone call, text message, email, or through a mobile app. Notifications might include road closures, detours, construction notices, and other updates affecting travel on the county road network.
Berrien County Commissioner Alex Ott gave a preview of the app at a recent county board meeting.
“(Users) can log onto the website or through their phone and sign up for alerts for the road construction.”
Ott said the app has the potential for additional road-related alerts sometime in the future.
“You know, I did ask (the managing director) if it’s going to be weather related down the road… I’m sure that’s something that’s going to happen later on.”
Officials say users can choose how they wish to be contacted and can update their preferences at any time. The road department recommends email for receiving updates during construction season.
BCRD ALERT is available through online registration, and subscribers can also download the app.
According to the road department’s website, the contact and location information provided by users will only be used for notification purposes. More information and registration links are available on the Berrien County Road Department’s website.
