MLB – Cubs slugger Kyle Tucker rests as he tries to break out of a prolonged slump
Kyle Tucker is trying to break out of a prolonged slump, and the Chicago Cubs are doing whatever they can to help the All-Star outfielder. Nothing is working at the moment. Tucker rested while Chicago swept a doubleheader against Milwaukee. He is batting .148 in August, and he has just two extra-base hits in his last 24 games. Tucker was acquired in a trade with Houston in December. He is eligible for free agency after this season, but he said that isn’t a factor in his trouble at the plate. Asked about his health, Tucker insisted he is fine.
NHL – Red Wings to retire “91”
The Detroit Red Wings will officially honor Hockey Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov by retiring his iconic No. 91 jersey in a pre-game ceremony at Little Caesars Arena before their matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes. Fedorov, who played 13 of his 18 NHL seasons with Detroit, amassed 954 points (400 goals, 554 assists) in 908 games, and played pivotal roles in three Stanley Cup championships (1997, 1998, 2002), two Selke Trophies, and an MVP season in 1993-94 when he captured both the Hart and Ted Lindsay Awards and notched 120 points. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 and named one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” in 2017, Fedorov will become the ninth Red Wing to have his number enshrined in the rafters
NCAAFB – No. 6 Notre Dame names CJ Carr starting quarterback over Kenny Minchey
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback over Kenny Minchey for the season opener against Miami. The two had been in a quarterback competition during the preseason. The announcement was made Tuesday on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program. Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season’s run to the national championship game. He has not thrown a college pass. Minchey has completed all three of his passes in his first two seasons and scored his first college TD on a 7-yard run against Purdue last season.

WNBA – Fever suffer another blow as Cunningham sustains season-ending injury
The injury-riddled Indiana Fever say guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the rest of this season with a knee injury. She was hurt during Sunday’s victory at Connecticut. Team officials did not provide details about the injury, the third season-ending one Indiana has experienced in August. Guard Sydney Colson tore the ACL in her left knee on Aug. 7 in a game at Phoenix. Guard Aari McDonald broke a bone in her right foot in the same game. Two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark still has not played since injuring her right groin in mid-July.
NFL – Colts name Daniel Jones the opening-day starting quarterback
Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen says he has selected Daniel Jones as his starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson. Steichen said Tuesday the decision was based in part on consistency and accuracy and that Jones would be the starter for the season, noting that Richardson is just one play away from being needed. Jones reclaims the starting job he lost with the New York Giants last season. He asked for and was granted his release during the season, signed with the Minnesota Vikings and then joined the Colts as a free agent in the offseason.
NBA –Pacers reward coach Rick Carlisle for NBA Finals run with mulityear extension
The Indiana Pacers rewarded coach Rick Carlisle with a multiyear contract extension Tuesday following the team’s surprising run to the NBA Finals. Team officials made the announcement about one month before the Pacers open training camp. The Pacers provided no additional details about contract terms. Carlisle enters this season needing seven wins to become the 11th coach in league history with 1,000 career wins. His 555 career wins with Dallas are a franchise record and his 338 wins with the Pacers are the most in the franchise’s NBA history. He also served as an assistant on Larry Bird’s coaching staff in 1999-2000 — the only other time Indiana reached the Finals.

Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has been deported to Mexico following his arrest in the U.S. for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application. Chávez was handed over by authorities and admitted to a prison in the northern state of Sonora. That’s according to an official who spoke Tuesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Chávez had a warrant for his arrest in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking and ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. He was arrested July 3 days after his high-profile fight with Jake Paul in California.
