A bill to ban ranked choice voting has passed in the Michigan House.

With a 57 to 44 vote, the bill would amend the Michigan election law to prohibit the use of ranked choice voting, a process that pushes multiple rounds of eliminations until a single candidate reaches more than 50% of the voters. Republican state Representative Ann Bollin voted in favor of banning that process.

Ranked choice voting is not easy, it is not simple, and it does not ensure that one person only has one vote,” Bollin said. “I call on this chamber to vote in support of this bill.”

The legislation now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
