There’s a push in Lansing to crack down on drivers who flee from police.

A bill was discussed in the House Judiciary committee this week that would stiffen penalties for leading officers on a chase. State Representative Rylee Linting, a Republican from Grosse Ile Township, introduced the bill.

Our law enforcement officers on the ground will tell you, this issue is only getting worse,” Linting said. “Not long after I was elected, I sat down with Police Chief Hamilton of Wyandotte to discuss how I could support his department and help create safer communities in Downriver and across the state of Michigan. Chief Hamilton has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years, often without the attention or urgency it deserves.”

The bill would institute a 182 day minimum jail sentence for those guilty of a fourth-degree offense, up to a first-degree offense with a minimum of five years.
