Lake Michigan College is naming one of its new athletic fields in honor of the matriarch of women’s athletics on campus.

LMC Vice President of Advancement and Community Impact Doug Schaffer tells us they’ll hold a dedication ceremony next Saturday to officially name the Liz and Lloyd Miller Family Field. Schaffer says Liz is a legend for LMC athletics.

We chose the softball field because she coached all of the women’s sports at LMC, but she really developed a powerhouse team with softball and then later went from LMC to build a national contending softball team at the University of Notre Dame,” Schaffer said.

Liz started the Lake Michigan College women’s athletics program as a three-sport coach in 1974. Her husband was also a big supporter of the college.

This softball field dedication will honor her tenure as the softball coach. It will honor her husband, Lloyd, who did an amazing amount of volunteer work for the college, not only just supporting his wife with softball and athletics.”

The new AstroTurf softball field is part of the renovated West Campus Athletic Complex that also includes new baseball and soccer AstroTurf fields. The fields were built to solve a flooding problem that had been plaguing LMC athletics the last few years.

The dedication ceremony will be Saturday, September 20 at 11:45 a.m. at the Benton Harbor campus. It will be held immediately before the softball doubleheader between the LMC Red Hawks and the Bethel University Pilots that starts at noon.
