Guardians 3, Tigers 1 – Surging Guardians complete sweep with 3-1 win over slumping Tigers in Skubal’s return
Jose Ramirez hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh inning after Tarik Skubal was replaced and the surging Cleveland Guardians swept the slumping Detroit Tigers with a 3-1 win. Cleveland has won seven straight to close within 3 1/2 games of the AL Central-leading Tigers with a little more than a week left in the regular season. The teams are scheduled for three more games Sept. 23-25. Detroit has lost six of its last seven games and 15 of 22. Returning from an injury scare last week, Skubal gave up one run, seven hits and struck out nine over six innings.
Reds 1, Cubs 0 – Hunter Greene tosses first career complete game as wild-card chasing Reds blank Cubs 1-0
Hunter Greene pitched a one-hitter and Will Benson drove in the only run with a fourth-inning double as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0. Greene (7-4) struck out nine and walked one in his first career complete game. After retiring Michael Busch on a deep drive to the warning track for the first out of tghe n inth inning, he struck out Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ to end it. The victory helped Cincinnati stay within two games of the New York Mets for the third NL wild card. The Mets beat the Padres 6-1 on Thursday.

Bills 31, Dolphins 21 – Josh Allen’s 3 TD passes and Terrel Bernard’s pick secure Bills’ 31-21 win over Dolphins
Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and Terrel Bernard intercepted Tua Tagovailoa with three minutes left to secure the Buffalo Bills’ 31-21 win over the Miami Dolphins. James Cook had 108 yards rushing and a 2-yard TD as the Bills continued their dominance of Miami. Buffalo has won seven straight and 14 of the past 15, including playoffs, against its AFC East rival. The Dolphins fell to 0-3 and coach Mike McDaniel will likely face more questions about his job security. Allen finished 22 of 28 for 213 yards and improved his record to 14-2 over Miami.

NFL – NFL: Eagles should’ve been penalized for a false start on a tush-push vs. KC
The NFL said in a training video to officials that the Philadelphia Eagles should have been penalized for at least one false start when they used the tush push against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. Ramon George, the NFL’s vice president of officiating training and development, highlighted a missed false start by Eagles right guard Tyler Steen on a third-and-1 with 5:34 left in the third quarter and Philadelphia leading 20-10. The Eagles won the Super Bowl rematch 20-17.

Fever 87, Dream 85 – Boston has go-ahead basket with 7.4 seconds left as Fever beat Dream 87-85 to reach semis
Aliyah Boston made the go-ahead basket with 7.4 seconds left, Lexie Hull stole the ensuing inbounds play and the Indiana Fever beat the Atlanta Dream 87-85 to advance to the WNBA semifinals. Despite missing Caitlin Clark among its injured players, Indiana closed on a 7-0 run to win a playoff series for the first time since 2015. Boston was left alone under the basket for an easy layup after Brionna Jones went to the ground going for a loose ball. It gave Indiana its first lead, 86-85, since it was 33-30. The Fever will play on Sunday against Las Vegas.

NHL – Blashill puts Blackhawks through challenging practice on 1st day of training camp
Jeff Blashill told the Chicago Blackhawks to be ready to go for the start of training camp, and he wasn’t kidding around. The Blackhawks had a rigorous first day of practice, and Blashill was everywhere in his first real look at his new team since he was hired as coach in May. His big task is moving along a painful rebuilding process after Chicago won a total of 74 games over the previous three seasons. There is talent — led by Connor Bedard, who just turned 20 in July — but the Blackhawks assuredly will be one of the NHL’s youngest teams on opening night. So Blashill has some work to do.
NHL – Ovechkin turns 40. Caps’ star’s future past this season remains uncertain
Alex Ovechkin remains reticent about his future. He spoke with reporters at the Washington Capitals’ media day on Thursday. A day after his 40th birthday, the NHL’s career goal-scoring leader said he hasn’t been thinking much about what happens after this, his 21st season. That wait-and-see approach seems fine with the Capitals as Ovechkin enters the last season of his contract. The Russian star scored 44 goals last season despite a broken leg that limited him to 65 games. His pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894 goals was a highlight of the NHL season, and Ovechkin enters the 2025-26 campaign three shy of 900.
NHL – LA Kings captain Anze Kopitar says he will retire after his upcoming 20th season
Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar says he will retire from his 20-year NHL career after the upcoming season. The 38-year-old Kopitar made the announcement Thursday following the first practice of training camp with the Kings. The Slovenian center has spent his entire adult life with the Kings since making his NHL debut in October 2006. He is a five-time NHL All-Star, a two-time winner of the Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward, and a three-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanlike play.
Track – McLaughlin-Levrone cracks 48 seconds in historically fast 400 at the worlds
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has become the first woman in nearly 40 years to crack 48 seconds in the 400 meters. She timed 47.78 in an historically fast one-lap race at the world championships in Tokyo. McLaughlin-Levrone had company. Second-place finisher Marileidy Paulino clocked 47.98 on the rain-slickened track. They were the second and third-fastest times in history, behind only the 47.60 run by East Germany’s Marita Koch in 1985. That’s one of the last remaining vestiges of an Eastern Bloc doping system that was exposed decades after it ended.
