A South Haven home was badly damaged Monday afternoon after a fire spread from a nearby gazebo, according to South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES).

Fire crews were called to the home on School Street near Superior around 2:20 p.m. after someone nearby reported the blaze. When firefighters arrived, they found the gazebo fully engulfed and flames spreading toward the house.

SHAES officials say the situation was especially dangerous because of downed power lines and at least one burning propane tank. Crews were able to contain the fire before it spread further. The back exterior of the home sustained heavy damage, but everyone inside made it out safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
