With the cold weather about here, Indiana Michigan Power is urging customers to remember a few safety tips to avoid fires in the winter.

I&M Spokesperson Schnee Doyle tells us with more power being drawn in the home, electrical cords should be checked for fraying and items should be unplugged when not in use. Don’t use extension cords with large appliances and watch how you use space heaters and electric blankets.

Make sure that you use extreme caution,” Doyle said. “Please inspect the heating devices regularly and do not use if the wires are frayed or damaged. Also unplug a space heater or the electric blanket when you’re not using them and never sleep with them on.”

Doyle says it’s also important not to overload circuits. So, if you’re using an appliance or setting up some seasonal decorations, take care.

So make sure that you check the label or manufacturer’s instructions. On the instructions, it should list your appliance’s wattage or however much that will use.”

In the event of a power outage, Doyle tells the users of gas-powered generators to keep them outside and away from doors and windows. Only plug things directly into them and not through an extension cord.

Finally, I&M reminds everyone that a furnace that runs well will be more efficient. So, be sure to get that furnace inspected as the weather cools down.
