Pistons 114, Jazz 103 – Cade Cunningham scores 31 points, leads Pistons past Jazz 114-103
Cade Cunningham scored 19 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Detroit Pistons won their fourth straight, beating the Utah Jazz 114-103 on Wednesday night. Jalen Duren added 22 points and 22 rebounds for the Pistons, which improved to 6-2, and Ausar Thompson added 18. Former Piston Svi Mykhailiuk scored a career-high 28 for the Jazz, who have lost four of five. Lauri Markkanen added 25 and Jusuf Nurkic had 17 rebounds. Detroit, which came into the game second in field-goal defense at 42.9%, held Utah to 38.4% (33-86). The Jazz missed nine of their first 10 shots in the third quarter, allowing the Pistons to build a lead. The margin was nine, 78-69, after Utah shot 18% (4-22) in a 14-point quarter.
Nets 112, Pacers 103 – Porter scores 32 as Nets beat Pacers 112-103 for 1st win
Michael Porter Jr. had 32 points and 11 rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets overcame the loss of leading scorer Cam Thomas to claim their first victory of the season in a 112-103 road win over the Indiana Pacers. Porter made 10 of 20 shots, including four 3-pointers, as the Nets pulled away in the fourth quarter in a game of spurts that featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties. His extra scoring effort was needed after Thomas, who entered with a 24.4-point scoring average, exited midway through the first quarter with hamstring tightness. The Nets, who had lost the first seven games this season, got four other double-digit efforts as Nic Claxton scored 18, Noah Clowney had 17, Tyrese Martin 16 and Terance Mann 15.
NBA – NBA staff members meet congressional staffers to discuss gambling scandals
NBA staff members have met with congressional staffers to discuss the league’s relationship with sportsbooks. This comes after federal indictments of Miami guard Terry Rozier, Portland coach Chauncey Billups and others last month. The meeting, held Wednesday, did not include NBA Commissioner Adam Silver or any sitting members of Congress. Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell have requested information on the NBA’s gambling policies and why Rozier was cleared to play after sportsbooks flagged unusual betting patterns in a March 2023 game. Rozier was accused of conspiring to help associates win bets based on his performance.

NHL – Alex Ovechkin scores his 900th NHL goal with the Washington Capitals
The NHL now has a 900-goal club. Charter member: Alex Ovechkin, of course. The Washington star pushed his record total to a new level Wednesday night, scoring against the St. Louis Blues to reach 900. The milestone came 2:39 into the second period. Ovechkin was lurking in the offensive zone and was at the bottom of the right circle when he backhanded Jakob Chychrun’s rebound past a sliding Jordan Binnington, who wasn’t able to recover in time. The bench cleared to celebrate the 40-year-old’s accomplishment, while Binnington tucked the milestone puck into his pants.

NFL – Bears hoping -Shoyinka and Booker can help the team’s defensive line situation
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles believes he did the best he could to improve the team’s pass rush without throwing away its future. Chicago acquired defensive lineman Joe Tryon-Shoyinka in a trade with Cleveland at the deadline on Tuesday. Tryon-Shoyinka, a former first-round pick by Tampa Bay, should help make up for the loss of defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury. Bears coach Ben Johnson says the team was “kind of low in numbers there in that D-line room.” The Bears also upgraded their defensive line when Austin Booker had an impressive season debut in Sunday’s 47-42 victory at Cincinnati.
NFL – Colts welcome addition of Gardner and are hopeful to see him on the field Sunday
Indianapolis Colts receiver Alec Pierce walked into the locker room Wednesday, took a peek a couple of lockers away and found an old friend, two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. It was a reunion of sorts for the duo who helped lead the Cincinnati Bearcats to the College Football Playoff in 2021 and teamed up last summer to win a golf tournament. Now, after a stunning trade deadline deal, Pierce and Gardner again are teammates chasing the same goal — a championship. And the Colts have high hopes that Gardner can help solidify a glaring weaknesses, a pass defense allowing 244.8 yards per game.
NCAAFB – Notre Dame looking for a solution for its kicking woes in Navy matchup
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has his team sitting at No. 10 in the AP poll and the College Football Playoff’s first rankings of the season. If the Fighting Irish intend to stay in the postseason picture they’ll have to kick the habit of missing field goals and extra points. It’s been a season-long problem that re-emerged in last weekend’s 25-10 victory over Boston College when three different kickers missed attempts. Freeman would like to give those problems the boot, starting with Notre Dame’s annual game against rival Navy on Saturday.
MLB – Flaherty, Bieber exercise options for 2026 as 9 more players become free agents
Detroit pitcher Jack Flaherty and Toronto pitcher Shane Bieber have exercised their player options for 2026 instead of becoming eligible for free agency. San Diego pitcher Wandy Peralta also exercised his option, while Arizona outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Baltimore outfielder Tyler O’Neill and Texas outfielder Joc Pederson decided not to opt out of their contracts. Nine more players became free agents, raising the total to 162. About 20 more players potentially could go free on Thursday, the last day of the five-day window. Flaherty earned $25 million this year from his deal with Detroit and decided to keep a $20 million salary for next season.
