The city of Bridgman is receiving a state grant of more than $1 million to fix up a street serving a manufacturer as it plans an expansion.

The Michigan Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced Bridgman is one of two communities receiving support through its Transportation Economic Development Fund grant program. Bridgman City Manager Debbie Lambrix tells us they’re going to rebuild portions of Willard Avenue and Mathieu Street as Industrial Fabrication plans an $800,000 expansion.

They are increasing the size of their building, and they’re going to be increasing truck traffic and what they can do, their abilities there,” Lambrix said.

Industrial Fabrication is planning to add two new warehouses, retaining 35 jobs and creating eight new positions. Lambrix says the street project will make a big difference for both Industrial Fabrication and residents.

It will greatly improve. Right now we’re just patching over patching, and this road is needed. Both roads have needed some major help, so this will allow us to do it the right way instead of just patching as we go.”

Industrial Fabrication has outgrown its facility and previously considered leaving Michigan due to the poor road conditions, but working with the city, a better arrangement was reached. Lambrix says she’s glad to see everything come together.

I’m excited for the community. I’m excited for the residents that will finally get a road that they deserve. And I was just here to make sure the pieces line up so this project can happen.”

Lambrix says the city’s portion of the street reconstruction will be about $256,000 for an overall $1.28 million project. It will also include sidewalk, storm sewer, curb, and drainage improvements.

Work could start in the next 18 months.
