It’s the biggest fish in the Great Lakes, and a lot people want to catch one.

Sturgeon season is this Saturday in northern Michigan. 700 people are expected to show up on Black Lake in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties for the chance to catch a sturgeon.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries supervisor Tim Cwalinski says the sturgeon is a unique catch.

There’s still a component of many anglers who want to catch large fish, and sturgeon, we see them up to over 70 inches long, over 100 pounds almost every year,” Cwalinski  said. “And they’re an interesting fish, a unique fish. It’s a historic dinosaur-like fish.”

It will probably be a quick season because only six sturgeon can be caught. That’s due to conservation rules and the ongoing rehabilitation of the prehistoric fish.

Cwalinski  says a sturgeon can weigh more than 300 pounds and live to be 100 years old.
