The Chikaming Township Board of Trustees has released a study on short-term rental properties in the community as it considers a potential update to the ordinance governing STRs.

The report now posted to the township website says 13% of the homes in Chikaming Township are short-term rentals, something that Supervisor David Bunte tells us residents have expressed concerns about.

Bunte says the short-term rental ordinance was created in 2018 and hasn’t been updated since, and with limited resources, township leaders are considering how or whether they should approach new rules for the properties. That could include noise restrictions, inspections, or limits on their number.

With 520 STRs in the township, Bunte says they have become a topic of conversation with residents having a wide variety of opinions.

The township board was to discuss the results of its study Thursday night, and Bunte says action could be taken next week. He could not predict what action that might be.
