Congressman Bill Huizenga says he’s making headway in an effort to rein in federal spending as cabinet level officials express interest in a proposal from the Bipartisan Fiscal Forum, a group seeking to reduce the deficit.
Huizenga tells us he spoke to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a hearing last week about setting a target for spending.
“Having a resolution that would put federal spending into a 3% of deficit,” Huizenga said. “Right now, we’re spending almost 7%, and we want to knock that down. And there’s a bipartisan effort to do that.”
Huizenga says the idea has gained traction across party lines
“Secretary Bessent yesterday told me that he’s very interested in working with us on that particular issue because we know the debt and the deficit situation is unsustainable.”
Huizenga says Congress needs to find long-term solutions to curb spending and stabilize the federal budget. He added, “We have got to wrestle this dragon to the ground.”
