The Rx Kids healthcare program is expanding to the entire Upper Peninsula starting next month.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Monday the program, which has been in five counties in the U.P, will grow to all 15 in the region in March.

We know that childbirth is a vulnerable time in everyone’s life,” Whitmer said. “There could be health complications, income tends to drop, expenses definitely rise, and that’s why RxKids is so important. It helps families when they need it most, no matter what.”

Rx Kids is a prenatal and infant cash prescription program that provides $1,500 to mothers during pregnancy, and $500 a month for babies for between six and 12 months after they are born.

Making the announcement, the governor said every kid deserves a bright future.

The program is led by Michigan State University. It’s also available in parts of Berrien County — specifically Benton Harbor, Benton Township, Buchanan, and Niles.
