A STEM summer camp for young students is returning to Southwestern Michigan College thanks to a new grant from the Bosch Community Fund.

SMC says with the help of Bosch, it will host its eighth STEM Summer Camp during the third week of June on the Dowagiac campus. The two-day camp will serve about 120 students in grades four through six. Teachers and SMC faculty will design the curriculum, while high school and college students will work as counselors and mentors.

SMS says the goal of the camps is to spark student interest in science, technology, engineering, and math while also introducing them to a college learning environment.

Math and physics professor Andrew Dohm says that age group is especially eager to learn, and the camp helps students imagine themselves as future engineers, scientists, and problem-solvers. He also notes that last summer’s camp included 164 kids from schools all over Cass, Berrien, and Van Buren counties, adding more than half of them were girls, a first.

Registration information for this year’s camp is expected to be available at the end of May.

Southwestern Michigan College thanked the Bosch Community Fund for supporting the program.
