The city of South Haven is notifying drivers that they should expect closures and detours near Dunkley and Dyckman Avenues starting this week as water main construction gets underway.

The South Haven Department of Public Works says the project will happen in phases through early May.

During the first phase, Dunkley Avenue will be closed to through traffic north of Dyckman for several weeks, with detours posted along Phoenix Street, Blue Star Highway, and Wells Street. Bridge traffic will remain open.

In the second phase, westbound Dyckman and part of Dunkley will be restricted, with additional detours in place and some bike lane closures.

Pedestrians are urged to follow posted signs and avoid construction zones.

Final work will include paving and concrete repairs, with brief closures announced ahead of time.

The department says the project is part of an ongoing $42 million effort to upgrade South Haven’s water and sewer systems.
